  1. The title of this multicultural text is Labour Day and it is written by Geoffrey Scott. This book gives an historical account rather than tell a story; consequently, its tale borders on being more expository in nature rather than narrative. I think that the book is informational as it clearly outlines the preview to Labour Day in America then details the process that led to this holiday before finally focusing on what happened immediately after its institutionalization.Latoya what have you gathered you readings?

  2. The prolific Geoffrey Scott and Cherie R. Wyman have done it . The book Labour Day is a multicultural book. The theme presented inthis book transcends time or personal prejudices. Labour day as we know it internationally went through a phase .I was instantly captivated by the cover of the book. The lines used to create the pictures are thin but sharp and denotes precision. Since the pictures on the jacket was the first things that caught my attention i attempted to first look at all the pictures. The front cover shares tension , fear and apprehension whilst the bck cover show celebration , joy and victory. i wanted to see what te inside was like. The picturs lent themselves to personal interpretation. Then supported by the text i was able to yet see the connection between both. Pam what are your views on the quality of this genre and themes reflected ?

  3. After our reading and discussion of the text, I am sure you will agree with me that this book is quite multicultural as it documents a national holiday in the American culture. It really captures the different kinds of workers from different backgrounds who make up the working class in America. This book is a realistic, historical expository piece of writing. It is written in the form of a report.
    Literary quality
The tale was set in New York in America. The characters represented were the different kinds and categories of workers that existed in the period. The plot was clear and easy to follow as it chronicled the ‘before, during and after’ of Labour Day. The thematic concerns expressed in this book are those of unity, coorperation, change, determination and strength. The language and sentence structures are simple so children wouldn’t find it difficult to read.
Thelanguage was simple enough for me and I believe that most students at the requisite age level would find it an easy read. The illustrations were a bit bland but I can appreciate that it was done probably strategically to highlight the era in which the book was written – it is an old book with publication in 1981 I also believe that it would be a better read if it was written from a first person narrative perspective.Latoya I was so engaged as I read this book. How do you think it can be utilized in the classroom?

  4. This book is multicultural as it highlights the holiday on the American calendar . I applaud the effort of the pioneers and is saddened by the lack of appreciation we sometimes express in relating to something of this nature. I see this book as an ideal book for integration in our school curriculum as it will serve as a tool for awakening the awareness of our students and builds appreciation and acceptance of our individual culture and to see how across the globe we are so similar

  5. Latoya this book is so appropriate for Grades 4-6 as they focus on holidays and culture in their curriculum. These children can learn so much about national holidays and how and where they were originated.
This book can be utilized in the classroom in the following ways:

    2. Engaged in expository writing (factual details)
    3. Discussion log
    4. Maths- Calculate date when Labour Day originated to present
