  1. Hi Verena and Mazie
The book "Sweet, sweet mango tree and other stories" is an interesting compilation of stories that refers to our Jamaican culture. The book is intended to be used with 9 - 10 year old children. I think the stories are culturally relevant and speak directly to the experiences and fantasies of children that age. I think it is a good book as the elements of fiction in the book is skillfully woven together in the varied stories. How do you think children age 9 - 10 would appreciate such a book based on the quality? Are the charaters and plot relevant to their experiences?

  3. HI! Carolyn & Mazie,
I find the book very interesting and fun to read. Children between the ages 8 – 10 will love the fairytale characters in the book. The pictures in the story allow the story to come alive. Children are fascinated with fictitious characters.
I enjoyed the fairytale story line and I know that the children will too as they read or listen to these stories.

The genre I believe is acceptable to our culture, in that Jamaican children are used to hearing fairytales, duppy and anacy stories from their grandparents at an early age. Therefore, when children read these books they are excited about the characters in the story, because they have heard about them before and the love the silly things that they do in the story.

I believe all children both boys and girls would appreciate these books in that, it appeals to their imagination and the pictures are very colourful. Children between the ages 9-10 loves to hear about fairytale eg. anancy story. At a first glance the children would choose this book because the characters/pictures appeal to their taste.

  6. Hi ver,
I agree with you, I also find that the themes in the stories are cultural. "The Letter" could appeal to the children as they can relate to the plot in the story. This story could also be used with older children who shows such interest in the book.

  7. Hi Ver,if the pictures should be taken out of the stories would be less appealing. Even myself as an adult enjoy reading with pictures,it adds meaning and stimulates the mind.
