The book entitled Marian Anderson A Great Singer was written by Patricia and Frederick Mc Kissack. These authors are African Americans who relayed the career of the great African American Singer Maria Anderson. It is a suitable book for just about anyone who is interested in knowing about her. I think I would use this book with my students to teach them about history: the struggles black people encountered in the early centures. I also think this story can also be used to motivate them to work hard to achieve their career/ goals.. Maria, what do you think?
ReplyDeleteThe book has real pictures which supports the story told. The pictures are relevant and are consistent with the timeline of the story.
The story has asides which summaries the story. This I think is great. This can be used to preview the story.
The language used is clear and simple. The authors seem to have done an in depth study in the life of Marian Anderson. What do you think?
Yes it could be used to motivate students as well as to educate them about the American culture as Anderson was not only lack but American and she helped to shape their history. But i also have a question for you. Im redirecting your question. How do you know that the authors did an indepth study on the life of Marian? Whats the indicator(s)? you said the study was indepth. Why?
ReplyDeleteI like the use of the photograhs which helped to add life to this dead persons life. It's as if through pictures I was brought closer to her and her life's experiences. What I have noticed however, is that the biography captured the factor that was responsible for her fame...her singing. And the pictures used somewhat played the part of helping to illuminate this aspect as most of them captured a special event during the course of her rise to fame. Interestingly also, the authors asides as you pointed out adds much value to the biography. It not only summarises the different aspects of her achievements it also gives insights of how this person lived, how when and where.
It's simple yet quite informative, interesting and educational..Children could enjoy reading this book..and make comparison with our own Jamaicans who achieved greatnees and fame in their lifetime.
I do agree with you, Our Jamaican students could compare Marian's life story with one of our own stalwarts. In resonse to your re-directed question, I felt as if the authors did an indepth study of Marian because they were able to use real pictures in the story. I think much effort was exerted in order to get these pictures. The book was revised in 2001 and the photographs were taken as far back as 1897. So, this explains my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteDid you notice the artifacts that were noted. These helped to add credibility to the story. They also helped the reader to connect to Marian. While I read I felt as though I wanted to be Marian not just for her achievements but also for her physical characteristics.
In concluding I felt it was worthwhile reading about Marian. I am driven to do researches to find out more about her. I think this book is a good one.
Its so interesting too how a person can lay sleeping between the pages. And as soon as you start reading the interest that is aroused is incredible. Before I read this book I knew nothing about this Marian person. But as I read my curiousity was so piqued I had to find out more about this famous person. My thoughts were too, how come I never heard of this person before if she was so accomplished?
ReplyDeleteThis is something we can pass on to the children.. We need to let them know how important it is to read because much of the unheard information is documented between the pages of books. Dont you think?
I do agree with you. The wider you read the richer your vocabulary becomes.
