    My personal response to the book
    This book has the requirements of being a wonderful fiction book for children.
    Therefore its illustrations are of bright colours and the words of the appropriate grade level which is grade 4.
    It is an appropriate book to teach students about laziness, greed, truancy, initiative vs. shame/doubt, dishonesty and fear.
    Personally I like the story entitled ‘Jenny Never Did Anything Right’, due to the fact I could connect to it personally. It is a Jamaican Fairly, our own Cinderella story.

    Evaluate it in terms of its genre

    The entire book uses a theme of Fiction. It also had subdivision of fiction such as myth, Jamaican fairy tale (folk tale) and realistic.

    Evaluate its literary quality
    Style and Language
    • The language in the book is simple but high enough for the grade level.
    • It does not use figure of speech but its language is real to life.
    • Use appropriate syntax.
    • The language it readable and creates images(imagery)
    Characters
    • They are real to life. In one of the story a boy had reading problems and ended up becoming a truant.
    • I cared about Jenny due to the fact that I could relate to her.
    Plot
    • The characters overcome their problem thought reality-Dave tells why he was hiding from school and his mother/teacher helped him
    • The events were credible base on the fact that stories theme- laziness, greed, truancy, initiative vs. shame/doubt, dishonesty and fear- are situations which affects primary school. This book gives them ways of dealing with these problems.

  2. Regarding the book 'Sweet,Sweet,MangoTree'...

    I particularly like 3 of the 4 stories- Sweet,Sweet Mango Tree, Jenny Never did Anything Right and The Letter because they had some satisfactory ending.

    Based on appearance the bookhas features of a fairly good book. It presents bright glossy colours on the cover and the title is large enough for children to see.

    The stories are all fictional. Except for The Letter, They contain mythical or elements of fantasy with characters like anansy who is a mythical figure and the about -why dogs chase puss.

    The language is simple, in mild tone,real harsh or scary words. chilren can ungerstand and relate to the stories. the content basically expressing the views and experiences of cildren in Jamaica and the Carribean.

    increase in knowledge about the elemtents will let you look at a book differently

  4. Yes, we can use books to bring so much experiences to students in the classroom. My mixed group of students, for example, have very limited experiences. My students who are deaf and hard of hearing get minimal exposure due to language barrier in the home and not hearing the language vicariously and my hearing student still gets limited exposure. It is books that can help to bring visual pictures of ideas and concepts.
