ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful book Officer Buckle and Gloria is. I could not stop laughing. Just imagine children's response? In this book Peggy Rathman author and illustrator has really used text and pictures to tell a remarkable story. The text tells one story but it the pictures which tell the comedic story. The Caldecott medal was truly deserving. I thoroughly enjoyed both aspects of the story. What say you?
Oh Connie.... Can I tell you how I enjoyed it too? I started reading on the way to my room and ccouldn't stop. I was in stitches... It's hilarious... Miss Rathman deserves more than a Caldecott, she needs a Nobel Peace Prize!!!! The book is quite colorful and the pictures themselves tell a story. I definitely need a copy for my daughter.

ReplyDeleteI am certain that the major characters in the story really caught your attention as they caught mine. Officer Buckle played his role well. He did what he had to do in an effort to bring across the pertinent information the students needed, however Gloria's antics in the background took the spotlight. Amazingly however when Gloria went on her own to make the presentation the comedic element was missing. Text and graphics really makes the difference in this story. Hopefully there is a sequel.
Oh sure, Connie, Officer Buckle and Gloria kept me intrigued throughout the book. I like the fact that the book shows that no one is an island! Do you notice that Officer Buckle was no good without Gloria and visa versa once they began working together?
ReplyDeleteWhen I look at the illustrations it's as if I'm part of the story. The choice of words too are excellent; no matter how old or young a person is, he/she can relate to and appreciate thestory for what it's worth. As I continue to marvel about the book and its contents, I'm picturing myself in my classroom after lunch doing a read-aloud with my students. After reading, I could use it as a teaching tool to teach safety tips. The students themselves could come up with the tips and display them all over the class.
I could also taech letter writing with it as I could have my students write to Officer Buckle nad Gloria inviting them to come and talk with the entire school population about 'keeping safe.'
In what way would you use this same story to taech your students, Connie? ...

ReplyDeleteI am glad you mentioned the creative use of the language in the story. Both children and adults will find it relevant. At the college level I would introduce this book in my Language Arts Methodology or Drama class to show my pre-service teachers how to use books that tell their story through texts and pictures.
I would let my students work in groups with copies of the text and peer and share what story they get from the pictures and what can they say about both Officer Buckle's character and Gloria's character just by what the pictures say. One group can describe the school setting when Officer Buckle is there alone, when Gloria is alone and when they are together. That should be fun!!!!!
This should prove not only fun but also be an eye opener. The students could also create a mime based on the story for class presentation.
I am really thinking of using it.
