  1. The book A Mink, A Fink, a Skating Rink What is a Noun? is of the poetry genre. It was written by Brian Cleary and Illustrated by Jenya Prosmitsky. The publisher is Carolrhoda (1999).

This book is an awesome book which can be used to teach the concept noun. It can be used to teach children from grade 1 to 4 this concept. He uses rhymes and rhythm effectively in order to create music to each line of the poem. The author uses the word 'noun' over and over again for emphasis thus helping the children to focus on the term noun.

The pictures are very clear and beautiful luring children to journey through the world of noun. Icilda this is really a wonderful book.

  2. Yes Cleo, I agree with you that this poem about nouns can be used to teach grade 1-4 students in a primary school. Grammar is usually a boring language arts topic to teach, but thanks to Brian Cleary the topic can come alive with his use of rhyme and rhythm. The illustrations further enliven this topic with their bright and appealing colors. These illustrations also help these young children to identify what are nouns. The illustrations help them to understand that nouns are not unfamiliar as they are present in their everyday surroundings.

  3. Cleo, do you notice that the poet uses alliteration, simile and visual imagery? These devises certainly add flavor to the poem. The alliteration especially can have children singing along.Notice too that the illustrations add humor and fun. This poem on nouns is a definite must use. I believe Cleary produced such a poem to stimulate and capture the attention of slow learners since he himself was a struggling reader in school. He is definitely giving voice to an unrepresented group and for that reason this poem may be considered a multicultural one. The illustrator Jenya Prosmitsky considering that she was born in St. Petersburg and grown in USSR has credibility since she would have had a wealth of experience in drawings which would stimulate young minds.

  4. I truly love this book Icilda, it gives children who are often considered to be reluctant readers a reason to read and love poetry. The rhyme and music of the lines will encourage them to want to experience the world of literacy.

The author Brian P. Cleary writing will really capture this audience. Students who are currently at this stage can really use him as a role model as has a young student he too was described as a reluntant leaner and a frustrated student. Information was acquired from http://www.author-illustr-source.com/briancleary.htm.
