The novel entitled The Underground is one which epitomises the struggle that blacks went through to achieve their freedom.I love this book because it takes me back to the Jamaican context where slaves ranaway from the plantation to to the mountains to escape the horrors of slavery.I apprecite this novel because it shows the resourcefulness of the blacks. The book wasexcelent from start to fnish and i apprecited the layout of the word s on the pages as it was slow and easy, unhurried.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Miriam that this book is not an historical fiction instead it gives you information on a particular period of time.I love the illustrations especially the one on the cover of the book as it is showing what a typical slvaery setting would be like. you could also detect the mood of the book by the shapes, colours, lines and shades that were used. The language was fitting and simole enough for the readers not to have any difficulties with.this could be used as before reading material for a grade 10 class in jamaican who would be doing a history lesson on American History or our own history topic Resistance and Revolt.
ReplyDeleteMoynia I think the author of this book was very objective, I did not see any bias he told the story objectively. He also brought the period to life in that the reader was transpoted into that time and place by the words (vivid descriptions) and the illustrations. I think this book is good to be used as a read aloud for smaller children(grade 3), but children in grades 4-6 can use it as a supplemntary text. The language is simple and easy to understand. Its a great history book. It brings the past alive and can be used to influence young readers to develop lifelong positive reading behaviour and to also develop in them a sense of time and how they fit into history
