  1. Sylvester the Magic Pebble by William Stieg
This book uses a familiar storyline. A normal family (donkey family) a normal child acquiring a hobby(collecting pebbles)and making wishes just like regular children do. Then the supernatural happens; his wish unexpectedly comes through. Any child from any culture can relate to the events as the story depicts a regular family setting and regular family events. I think the events were pridictable to a certain point, yet unpredictable in the sense that one was left to wonder what would happen to Sylvester:would he reamin a rock forever or would be become a donkey again. The story ends with a pridictable happy ending. I think the book is a modern fantasy in that it speaks to regular people experincing something magic or supernatural.

  2. Slvester is a donkey who collects pebbles as a hobby and finds an exceptional one that eventually lands in into trouble.I found the book interesting and liked the use of animals to tell the story. There is also a lesson to be learnt in the story and that is not all the things you wish for are actually good for you.It was easy to read and the events unfolding in the story made you want to find out what was eventually going to happen to Slvester.I think the genre of the book is modern fantasy. In terms of litrary quality i think that the plot was good as you wanted to see what was happening, the setting was one were students could relate to.

  3. The language of the book is quite simple and the pace just right for the events that has unfolded in the story. The book shows how people react in real life when they are faced with conflicts. It sometimes forces them to to make the wrong decisions. The illustrations used in terms of colours shows the melancholy mood of the situation afterSlvestr found the magic pebble which is in contrast to the beginning of the story. We are able to see the balance and rhythm of the design through the use of the visual elements in the illustrations that were used.I think the book could be used to teach about perseverance and that no matter what the situation is there is always hope.I also think that this book is intended to be used for the age group nine to ten year olds and a a read a loud for students in the smaller age groups.Enjoyable text!

  4. The plot is easy to follow, there is the conflict and a little suspense and then the resolotion at the end. I think the author uses the illustration effectively; bright pretty pictures at the beginning depicting a happy family, the changes throughout for example when Sylvester gets into trouble the weather becomes unfavourable but gets favourable agian when he is turned back into a donkey. Moynia I think this reading is for children in grades three and four but I agree that it can be used as a read aloud for younger children.
