My personal response to the book
ReplyDeletePAPA'S LATKES
1. Your personal response to the book
It reminded me of the lot of my grandmother death. I grew up with her and she took good care of me. She taught me a lot of things such as how to make cornmeal porridge and puddings. In addition she taught me lots of moral values such a being respectful and honest.
2. What genre you think it might be and why.
‘Papa’s Latkes’, is a Multicultural book in that some of the book’s characters are living in a different country other than is not their native land. However, they are maintaining their native culture through the use of words-latkes and the celebration of special holidays-Chanukah.
3. Evaluate its literary quality
It speaks of Jewish people bringing things from Poland to where there are living now. The language had a mixture of the English speaking country they are living in and their Jewish culture – the Papa saying “Ta-da! Eggs for Miss Dora Skolnick, champion egg beater.
4. Evaluate its illustrations
The colours used for each illustration gives the feeling of love. The different size of each character depicted how the character was feeling. Take for example when Selma crying about her mother’s death her picture took up most of the illustration on that page while the other characters were small with sad faces.
5. Discuss for whom the book is intended and the ways in which it might be used in the classroom
I think this book is intended for primary school children in providing them with information about another culture. This is so because it shows off a special Jewish festival and there are special holiday in other culture.
My first response to this book is that many students can relate to the story because of the loss of a family member.
ReplyDeleteI like the gentle and caring ways of the father, that the author and illustrator try to portray. The illustrators use of colour and details in the facial features of the characters helps to create the mood and the emotions of the characters.
I agree with you Belynda on the use of the book in the classroom. It could also be used as a cultural discussion piece for students beyond the primary level.
yes! Muareen we could use it to introduce a cultural about different nations and their special holidays. we could even try making some of the latkes. we colud also ask the student to talk and write about special family events that are not national holidays.
ReplyDeleteThe possibilities could be endless. The class could read (or be read to),different cultural books and have an international day where something of different cultures can be displayed.
