1. Your personal response to the book.
ReplyDeleteThe book Jumanji does have the elements of being a modern fantasy. Children playing a game then, all the things on the games appear in their home. This can be seen in its illustrations and words creatures and people coming from the other world. There are no magical objects are hero therefore, Jumanji is operating in the ‘Other World’ motif. I think that children would love this book due to the fact that the look to imagine things to escape their boredom through pretend play and creating imaginary friends.
2. What genre you think it might be and why?
We know it is a modern fantasy base on the fact that it speaks of other world – its only motif. And the other is know- Chris Van Allsburg.
3. Evaluate its literary quality.
Its mood is one of boredom, fare and caustic. All the books characters are believability- a girl, a boy, a man and different real life animals. The pacing of the quick- parents level the children at home, children are bored, they found the Jumanji game, played the game with all its mystical events, game finish and parents their parents return home. In addition, its theme is about working with others to solving problem.
4. Evaluate its illustrations.
Jumanji’s illustrations are used for text reinforcement and help to establish the mood.
5. Discuss for whom the book is intended and the ways in which it might be used in the classroom
I think this book is intended for children who love to pretend play and include in this play time imaginary world, people and magical objects. It could be used in my class to teach my students about playing with strange objects or household items they know nothing about.
1. Personal Response to book
ReplyDeleteThe book doesn't appeal to me personally. The lack of colour in the illustration gives me an ominous feeling but I guess that is the mood the author wants to capture. The theme in the story appears to be 'carefull what you wish,it may just come through.'
3.What genre you think it might be and why?
Yes, the fact that it depicts contemporary issues and lifestyle but with a supernatural twist makes it modern fantasy. It is fantasy because it goes beyond the realm of reality.
4. Evaluate its literary quality
The word choice and laguage is simple enough for students of 3rd grade up. It has some elements of a good plot- full of drama and suspense which can be appealing to readers.
5. Discuss for whom the book is intended and the ways in which it might be used in the classroom.
Although I wuold not personally buy this book as a gift for a child it could be of use in the classroom to help stir students imagination as to the reason behind the supernatural events in the story. It is useful for teaching dialogue. It also contains some unusual words teachers can introduce to the class for discussion and vocabulary building.
yes we could use it in our class for imaginary activities in classroom. do you really think it has a supernatural twist which makes it into modern fantasy. what are some of these supernatural twist?
ReplyDeleteWith all the creatures and objects in the game coming to life in the house and chasing the children, that was supernatural. For some reason Though,I believe that the unnatural happenings in the story were in the children's imagination because they were so bored.Wouldn't you agree?
