  1. Title of the book the Little House Written and Illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton
    Houghton Mifflin Company Boston

    Carlene says :
The book was about a little house situated out in the countryside where it enjoys every act of nature. The environment around the little house was serene and the little house enjoys looking at the many movements of nature. The book was a very good book that could speak to any audience even though it was written in simple language for children to understand it, it teaches a specific lesson about living in the country and in the town.

  2. Carlene I think the author did a very good job of showing the contrast of life in the country with life in the city. I also think that the personification of the house helped in carrying out this purpose. The author didn’t saddle the house with many human attributes (neither through language or illustrations) so even though the story was told from the house’ perspective the author used some of the more basic human emotions to show just how the house felt about life in the country in comparison to life in the city. Yes Carlene, it is a children’s book and I agree that the simple language especially in describing the changes brought about by industrialization and modernization in creating a city were deliberate for an audience of younger children. However, anyone can appreciate the lesson from it.

  3. I’m looking through my child’s eye and even though the illustrator made no deliberate effort to add human features to the little house that was personified, I see the house with eyes and a mouth do you see it? Can you identify through your child’s eye any other human features on the house? What do you think about the illustrations

Oh yes I can see that the little house was personified as just reading the story the way the author explicitly spoke about the book as if it is human and that there were children trees and fields around her for company. Yes Kimone through my child’s eye I am able to see the window represents eyes and the holes represents ears as if it is human.
From the illustration the house was strategically placed in the middle of high buildings where it was not able to see the sun or even the moon as the city lights could be seen in colour shining on it.

The story was about a reality something that really happened as the author seemed to be longing to see what city life was about and one day steam shovels dug a road infront of the little house and very soon the litlle house was placed in the center of a big city. This happened so fast that there was hardly anyone who pays any attention to the little house and it became very lonely. Kimone this story is a reality, what do you think? This can be referred to some place in our country Jamaica which was once densely populated what are your Views? before you know it grows into a big city. What do you think about its genre?

  6. As I said before, the book’s plot is very realistic it addresses an issue that is very relevant and real. I think I would place it in the Modern Fiction category. We have witnessed on numerous occasions how the tranquility and serenity , scenic beauty, flora and fauna of rural areas have been disturbed or even destroyed in the name of development. I like how the writer’s use of the phrase “pretty soon…” almost as a refrain, precedes the gradual change of the country into a city. There isn’t much dialogue , but where it occurs it is quite relevant and natural.

  7. The illustration used really supported the text. I was just thinking about a Jamaican child reading the story who might not be familiar with the seasons. The illustration of the seasons was really good and this could just be one of the many lessons that could come from the book in the classroom. Notice the mix of pastel and bright colours to illustrate the country symbolic of peace and untaintedness, purity, growth. In contrast to the darker colours used to show the gradual change to a city with polluted atmosphere, no plant life and steel structures going up all around. So present day!

Of course Kimone there are many other ways this books could be used in the classroom, it could be used with children from city and one from the country to compare and contrast what goes on in the city and what goes on in the town. Students could also draw pictures of city life and country life then act out the scene of what both entails for example in the city busy streets, factory smoke loud noises while in the country the green hills fresh daisies lovely moonlight and so on the book has avariety of strategies that could be utilized to enhance childrens love for the book.

    Carlene says.
The book was very interesting and children should be taught how to enjoy reading these book and develop a look for books. The literacy quality was awesome I am sure you would love to read this book over again just to retell the story.
