For this one time I must disagree with you. This book can be used by any age group, depending on its purpose. This book can be used by children in primary schools, high schools, college and look at us in university, we enjoyed it magnanimously. This book will peruse itself nicely in the Jamaican setting because children can relate to the characters, setting, events and plot of this story. This is a kind of book that would be suited for Jamaican Literacy 1-2-3 model. What do you think, Ms Crewe?
ReplyDeleteMufuro's Beautiful Daughters.
ReplyDeletecandice, when I first came across this book, the pictures on the cover captivated me. With the illustrations on the front cover alone made me want to dcelve in. I am exploring the illustrations on the front cover first before I actually go inside. See you on the inside Candice.
This traditional literature book is really appealing. This students in Jamaica can relate to because the illustrations look like the setting in Jamaica. Isn't it wonderful how students would just delve in this book as soon as they see it. The vocabulary is a little difficult but students can use context clues to arrive at the correct words.
ReplyDeleteFinally now Candice about the book. This book is intended in my opinion for students 9 - 12 years old. At this age children will want to explore and fanatsize about life and its challenges. This book can be used in the classroom when teaching parts of speech or in Religious Education when teaching the topic "Family" or 'Loyalty'. I tell you, I will be reading this book time and time again.
ReplyDeleteHi Candice,
ReplyDeleteWe are moving on to another book. This time it is the poetry book entitled'Meet Danitra Brown', written by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Floyd Cooper. Personally, I think we choose some books, books that can epitimize children of dark complexion. Children love to see illustrations that appeal to them because the picturtes look like them. The poems are really heart rending because they are highlighting the importance and good qualities of a true friendship. Some of the poems relate to our jamaican setting, especially the one that speaks of single parenting, (Mom and Me Only). This book is excellent. What do you think Candice.
Hi Candice,
ReplyDeleteAs we continue to delve in the poems in this book, it makes me stop and wonder. The genre ofv this book is poetry. This book contains ten strong poems that will touch the hearts of even the toughest reader.
The vocabulary of the book is manageable and is suitable for a grade four student say around age eight or nine. Older students will enjoy reading the poems because they are in story form. The only drawback to this book though, is the illustration. They are a bit blurry and the high buildings are not how the Jamaican primary schools are. only people who live in apartment buildings can relate to this. This book is ideal for teaching various topics in Science and Religious education as well as Social Studies.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicola!! I just realized that i was typing discussion three in the discussion two slot. Anyway Dr. Kirkjaun says it's fine. I am going to do the final blog on Meet Danitra Brown in the correct slot now.
ReplyDeleteI think the book 'Meet Danitra Brown' is suitable for children between the ages of 8-12. What do you think Nicola? Agree? Disagree?
