Title: Coming Home: from the life of Langston Hughs.
    Author: Floyd Cooper

This book which reflects the life of Langston Hughs is an inspiration to me. Even before I started my own personal reflection I went on the internet to find out when this great black writer was born. He was born on February 1, 1902 and died May 22, 1967. Floyd Cooper has brought back Langston Hughs to life in the words and pictures in the book.Personally, I believe there are several children out there who can relate to Langston's experience of being apart of a broken family. They can learn that even when something like that happends they can still achieve in life. That is powerful!! Dr. Kirkjuan would agree that it is an excellent book. What do you think Nicola? Reading this book, one can appreciate and accept the fact that Langston is from a humble background. The author obviously has a natural connection to him and takes pride in his Midwestern roots and heritage.Like me, I think he is inspired.

  3. Very Important:

While doing my reflection, I realized that the book' Coming Home: from the life if Lagston Hughs is an Auto Biography and not a Historical fiction.

    Title: The Underground Railroad
    Author: Ann Heinrichs

Nicola as I reflect on this book, i feel a sense of pride. Waht about you? How do you feel. Ann Heinrichs has taken painful events of the pastback into the future in simple yet powerful way.I think the feeling that was evoked initially stems from the fact that the events actually took place. The story is real and rich. It is a perfect introduction of some of the scars of slavery that have been etched on our minds.Th book is an asset and can be used as a trade in subjects such as History and Social Studies. There is alot to be learnt. I was even inspired to go on the internet to do aditional research about the Underground Railroad. Even though these events took place along time ago, the morals transcends time. Do you agree Nicola?

  5. I actually found myself looking at the captivating illustrations before I actually read the text because illustrations tell the entire story The water colour illustrations employed represnts the setting perfectly. Wonderful impressionistic work!! The inner darkness on the faces of some characters evoked asad alonely feeling. The book is an asset to teach in different subject areas. Smaller children can relate to the simple narrative while older readers can make connections between the resilience if of the people then and now. It could easily fit in the library of an elementary or High school. Shifting gears a little, I could not help but feel sad about the lack of appreciation and acceptance for our individual cultures and differences in times past.

  6. Nicola we both agreed that the book is a Historical fiction. That does not take away from the fact that themes are so profpund. The book was not a difficult read at all for me. I found the language simple, clear, and concise enough to understand. The story plot made me want to read more and taught valuable lessons. It is obviously a true story which is inspirational. It is illustrative, depicting strong emotions and evoking a particular mood and tone making it a beautiful story. What are your thoughts, Nicola? How did you react to the literary quality of this genre?

  7. Nicola, as we continue to reflect on this book which reminds us so much of our dreaded past, I have made a vey critical observation which I think will some what sway our discussion. I don’t think this book is historical fiction in the sense that the characters are not fictional. There might be similarities, but there is some overt differences between the two genres. Also, I am of the impression that sometimes genres tend to overlap. I think the book is more on the informational side. What do you think?Even though it is informational, the reader still becomes engaged, and even after the book is closed, a feeling a pain and regret lingers on.

  8. I totally agree with the observations that you have made. The book is a historical fiction. The charactersd are so real and it is as if I was emersed back to the days of old. Let us continue to read and see what else we can discover.

  9. Hey Candice,
Let me reverse a bit. The illustrations were great and I had to just browse through the pictures before I could actually start reading. As I read, tears came to my eyes because I can only imagine what those persons were going through. The good thing about these characters is the fact that they were smart and create codes that only them could assimilate. Slaves were smart people too.

  11. TTitle: The Underground Railroad
    Author: Ann Heinrichs
This book can be used in Social Studies and Drama, where children can reinact scenes in this story. The story is real and it is as if the author was part of the happenings. she just flow freely depicting strong emotions and evoking some strong emotions, which makes the story even more beautiful. So Candice, it seem as if our taughts were somewhat the same with this 'Historical Fiction'.
