  1. Nicola, I am extremely happy that we chose the book 'Croaking Johnny and Dizzy Lizzy'. I am sure that you feel the same way. It is a very exciting book set in a Jamaican country side. The large colourful illustrations adds to the life of the book and is perfect for children since the pictures match the text. This is a definate plus since remedial readers can simply use context clues from the pictures to help them decode words. I like the fact that even though its a love story, nothing is implied from information that may sway their minds.

The simple vocabulary is another plus. It's obvious that another author just wanted readers to enjoy the story rather than laboriously try to figure out the meaning of words. Most children will be able to relate to the text, thus making it easy for them to enjoy. The social views and values represented are appropriate and can create a learning experience.

Initially, looking at the book, I thought it could be placed under different genres. But a careful analysis reveals that it can be a fantasy.

  2. Hey Nicola!! AS we continue to reflect on the story, I realise that the literary quality of the book is excellent. The style and the language are simple. I can clearly see all the elements in a good story coming out e.g. the setting, theme, plot, etc. They are not implied. With a powerful language base, memorable characters and a compelling plot that will really appeal to readers, i can safely say the book is of a high quality. Nicola, what do you think?

  3. The book is intended for children between ages 8-12, and fits nicely into different focus questions within the Jamaican Primary school curriculum. Teachers can incorporate the story in the form of process drama and can have children creating reader’s theatre scripts. It can also be integrated in art as children can create puppets.

  4. Book Title: Mufuro’s Beautiful Daughters
    Caldecott Book
    Blog # 1
Mufuro’s Beautiful Daughters is a well written modern fable that teaches children the importance of being honest and patient. The illustrations are large and colourful. They represent stunning paintings that glow with beauty, warmth and internal vision of the land and people. It is written in a language that is easy to follow and it is clear why the book was awarded a Caldecott medal.
