ReplyDeletei did find the story to be intersting and motivating, what do you think?
ReplyDeleteThe ending was good. Why? It brought about joy for liz as she was satisfied with the letter she recieved from Miss Tiny. Children would be able to relate to her experience with miss Tiny.
ReplyDeleteThe book did bnot have a universal appeal due to the many creole (Patois) words that were used. It may be culturally relevant to a child in Jamaica but will not convey the same meaning to a child in the United States.
ReplyDeleteshe was more excited with the gift- goat. it should teach the children certain attitudes and value
ReplyDeletesometimes we under estimate the children and assume what they may or maynot able to do or read they will surprize us.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the plot of the story I think it could happen in real life. In most part children have childhood story of an old person they had several encounters with. The main character did over come her problem.

The plot is good as this could have happened in real life the climax seemed natural but there were no dramatic question.

ReplyDeleteYes the characters were real and I could understand the reason for their actions. It was nice that mis Tiny changed her cantankerous ways at the end of the story. Very good.
ReplyDeleteIt tells us the small can still teach the big and it is good that miss tiny actually did changed her attitude.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Liz She had a change of heart too. After reading the letter from miss Tiny. She showed emotion and gratude fro miss Tiny's change of heart.
ReplyDeleteThat is true.The setting was great too! I liked when Miss Tiny was trying to chase Liz from her yard as she thought she was trying to get into he yard to pick the ripe mangoes from her mango tree. She was guarding her mango tree ferociously. I guess children were always picking her mangoes without her permission.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the author didn't write using many descriptive words as readers we still could visualize the setting/PLACE.
ReplyDeleteWhat age group would you recommend this book for? As a teacher would you read this book for you class or children of that particular age group? I think this book is for children of age 8-9.
ReplyDeleteI agreed with the age group however sometimes we may under estimate our children abilities. i think most of it would be read as an independent because of the number of pages.

ReplyDeleteMost defintly, even if they are unable to relate to it through personal experiences it is imporant to gain knowledge for the unknown of life.
ReplyDeleteSome children at that age may be turned off, due to the difficulty level of some ofv these words that may be unfamiliar to them. Some of the French pronunciation was challenging forv me. I did not even know what the phrase meant. I tried to use context clues to decode but was still unable to do so. Can you imagine the frustration of a thirf grader?
ReplyDeleteYes. Children can learn a lesson from this story that may help them to change negative attitudes towards older peolple.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with you both. When children are reading reading for fun, the vocabulary should be familair so they do not have to worry about trying to figure out unsual words. (Rendezvous,discombobulate. profound eg. from text)
ReplyDeleteI think this would be fun to use with my children because they would be given the opportunity to learn new words and learn about their culture. This is so because we once had spanish, french, and other natives living here so this would be a good teachable moment for our children to learn more about our culture.

ReplyDeleteI would teach some of the unsual words before students begin to read and help them to use context to figure out the meaning of some unknown words.
ReplyDeleteYES, TO SHOW THE DIFFERENT ATTITUDES AND VALUES, LETTER WRITING SKILLS COMPARISON BETWEEN OLD AND THE YOUNG HOW TO CARE FOR ANIMALS AND ITS GROWTH.IT WILL SHOW INTEGRATION.
