ReplyDeleteHey Cleo, this is our traditinal book. The book is called The Elves and The Shoemaker recorded by the Brothers Grimm, and exquisitely illustrated by Barefoot Books(1998) is a fairy tale about the elves and the shoemaker. Through the events of this tale young children can learn about the reward of hardwork. This is a story of hope and encouragement. It qualifies as a traditionl story as it originated orally and there is not a known author. Note that the word recorded is used and not written by.
ReplyDeleteNotice the writer's craft. He begins the story with a cloud hanging over the shoemaker even though he is an industrious worker. Despite the fact that he works hard, he is unable to adequately finance his wife and himself. However, when he thinks all is lost the sun suddenly begins to shine through. By magic he wakes up in the morning to see the last piece of leather he has left transformed into an exquisite pair of shoes. He and his wife are dumbfounded and puzzled. There are unaware of who or what could be so kind to them.
Through the events this story teaches that once you are good you must triumph. The morale in itself is good, but can be misleading. I had a friend who thought that because of her good deeds life should have been fair to her. When an unfortunate incident took place in her life should could not manage the crisis and she took on a whole new persona, she had to be counseled because she shared a similiar belief as to the one this book portrays. Hence the students must be taught to evaluate the events of this story and its reality.
Hey Icilda, I also look at the Book Sweet, Sweet, Mango tree which was found @ www.childrenslibrary.org. This is in the modern fatasy category. I have found this book to be a must read. It is a book that is used by the Ministry of education Jamaica to complement its reading resources. Both the author and the illustrators have produced various reading materials which have been used by the Ministry of education Jamaica. The book was published by Ian Rand publishers(2002) The story was illustrated by Clovia Brown and was written by Diane Browne.
ReplyDeleteIcilda, whilst going through the book I have observed that the story contains beautiful illustrations which students can follow in order to make relevant predictions. What are you views? It contains a good moral in the story line as through this medium students will learn the importance of hard work. It is a easy read which will not frustrate struggling readers whilst motivating procious readers to read.
ReplyDeleteHi Cleo,
ReplyDeleteThis story could be read during the mango season when all the mangoes are ripe on the tree. Certainly a must read. The illustration is good depicting the juicy mango.
Certainly predictions can be made from the illustrations. The writer makes vivid descriptions and the story line is good. The characters are believable and the setting is authentic. The theme is a good. A foundation that prepares children well for the future. The author has the authority to speak on the subject since she grew up in the rural area of Jamaica where mango trees are usually in abundance and it is the custom of people to pick peoples fruits from their trees without permission.
