  3. The title of the book, Croaking Johnny and Lizzy Dizzy is thought provoking. The book is appropriate for the primary level. The language is simple. The print is readable. The book captivates the interest of young and old readers. The pictures are colourful and appropriate to the story. What are your views on the book. It seems to be from the modern fantasy genre.

  4. I think this book would make a fantastic read aloud session. Also it lends itself to a wide scope of activities. Through this genre the children are exposed to oral story telling as within this story was an expression of our oral culure. Students can also connect with the language as the diction used are similar to what the children are familiar with. Boys and girls will love this book ..it is humouros and stimulating and its overall a good book that teaches a moral lesson. Thats something u'd want to pass on to ur children isnt it?

  6. I do agree that this book would make a great read aloud reading lesson. The students can visualise the story as it is being told. The style of the author is super. The words used eg. bonononous, pickney are words that our students can relate to. these words bring life to a story. Do you think that students could dramatise this story?

  7. I do. I think they would enjoy taking on the characters and their traits. And besides students tend to be lovers of animals so dramatisation could be quite engaging for them. What other activities could we do with this book?

  8. I think that they could do a podcast. This would be a great way of allowing the students to become involved in their own learning. They would enjoy hearing the sounds of these animals. This would definately make reading fun and meaningful

  9. The book entitled Fables was written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. It won a Caldecott award for its illustrations. It consists of twenty original fables about an array of animal characters from crocodile to ostrich. The fables of focus are entitled The Crocodile in the Bedroom and Hen and the Apple Tree.
The Crocodile in the Bedroom took place at Mr Crocodile's home. There are two chacracters in the story Mr Crocodile and his wife. This is an appropriate book for the primary level. It is enhanced with colourful and captivating pictures.
Mr Crocodile can be described as a neat freak. He had problems conceptualising a real life situation. This is realistic in real life situation though, as there are persons who are so caught up in neatness that they have problems appreciating nature. Croc's wife appreciated nature and tried desperately to get her husband to do same. However this caused him to become sick.
His traits symbolises that of characters found in traditional literature. He did not change despite his wife's desperate attempts to get him out of his comfort zone.

  10. I agree with your views, The illustration is quit vivid and real and reveals much credibility. I also liked the fact that the characters were also believable even though they were animals. Children will be able to relate to the moral that is being portrayed by the characters. It speaks to the fact that persons who strive to be perfectionist can become unbalanced because one must accept that there will be things that he/she wont be able to control. And that is a valuable lesson to pass on the children who may be suffereing from low self esteem, or is faced with issues of confidence. The author used the plot to reveal this theme which further served to concretise his point. As the plot unravels the traits of the characters are revealed. The crocodile wants to achieve perfection and order in all areas of his life so he lies in bed staring at the perfect garden on his wall which is lifeless, but ignores the real things in life. As a result he becomes ill. EVen though animals were portrayed in this fable it speaks to humanity and human conditions which are quite relevant and appropriate. I think it is a good story.

  11. Hi Maria, we have not blogged for a while due to problems with the internet. However, let us discuss the activities that we could do with with our students using this book. I think a picture walk could be done before reading. Students could predict what the story is about using the pictures. Then they could read the book, then compare their predictions with what they read.

The stories in this book are really interesting. Another really interesting story is Hen and The Apple Tree. The illustrations are captivating. There were two charecters, The Hen and The Apple Tree. Both lifeless objects are given life. They speak to each other. The conversations seem real. These characters do not change or grow; they are symbolic in nature. The hen did not allow the wolf to outsmart her. This book teaches a moral principle. Students can learn the fact that they should be analytic and not be easily convinced in making choices.

  12. Hi Maria after reading through my posting, I realised I made an error. I referred to the hen and the wolf as being lifeless. Forgive me because we all know they have life.

  13. Yes,this is quite an interesting story. The underlined principle is so relevant to today. Thae illustration also add visual depth to the story as it helps to clarify the text. Without the illustration we would be forced to used our imaginagination to conceptualise but insted we are able to visualise the conception through the illustration which i thought was quite good.

I was also thinking that for an activity children could compare and contrast the illustrations. They could say what they think the illustrations add to each story or take away from it.
