  1. In this plog we look at the book, 'A Picture Book of Thurgood Marshall'. Personally, I am a lover of biographies. The story of Thurgood is rather inspirational and motivational. I feel so priviledged to grow and live with a biological family comparing to this great man that I have read about. It is truly a good book to read. Don't you think so?

  2. Let's backtrack a little. I seem to be confusing this story with the Carlos story. Thurgood is the boy who worked hard and eventually became a famous lawyer who fought for the rights of blacks. It is inspirational. What are your thoughts?

  3. I agree. This book is truly inspirational, being the story of a man who whose grandfather was a slave and who became a great civil rights leader and lawyer.
    It is a biography.

  4. Have you noticed how this biography makes the past seem real? In addition, this particular biography is about a man who overcame great odds. This is classified under the sub-genre, of authentic biography. Do you notice that it is also a picture book? Yes, it is heavily illustrated with large colorful pictures. These pictures show highlights of Thurgood's life. It is a wonderful way to tell children this story about this distinguished man. Your imput please.

  5. I agree with you and it appeals to children of varying ages. While it tells the life story of this great man it also deals with the theme of racism as we see him fighting for the rights of black people.
The setting is authentic ranging from his birthplace, to the university where he actually studied to the places where he practised law.

  6. While Thurgood is the main character in the story, we are introduced to other significant people in his life. For example, his mother who sold her wedding ring to send him to school, his father who inspired him, his teacher who punished him by giving him the constitution to read and later his other teacher who encouraged him. They all had an impact on his life.
In terms of the language, I think it is simple. The vocabulary is quite manageable and suitable for young children. The style is linear which makes the story easy to folow.

  7. The large colorful pictures make it suitable for young children but the facts can be used with any age group because this is history. Agree?

  8. That's true. It could be used in a poetry lesson. I am thinking of one of those poems,'The lynching' where racism is present. We often draw reference to Martin Luter King Jr. or Malcolm X but now we can include Thurgood Marshall as reference. This could be done in the 'beyond stage' of the lesson.
