  3. Personally I think this book is a simple little book for kindergarten children. The plot could be stronger but I guess the little one may not be ready for anything complicated. What do you think?

  4. I agree with you. It takes small children into a wonderland with the frog, rat and other creatures talking. They will enjoy reading or listening to same.

  5. "Frog went A-Courtin'" falls in the genre of Modern Fantasy and to be more specific, animal fantasy. This story is rooted in traditional literature. It has a story behind it origin. It was a story that was told and sung to children. Stories of frogs became a part of America.

  6. I guess that compares to our Anancy stories. This fantasy creates an alternative universe with animals talking and engaged in normal human activities such as seeking a bride and getting married.

  7. You are correct. What do you think about the literary quality? The literary quality cannot be overlooked. The plot is very simple. It is the story about a frog who courted and eventually married a mouse. This was only possible with the consent of her Uncle Rat. All the other animals attended the wedding which was going well until the cat appeared and disrupted the event. Frog and mouse went to France nevertheless.
What do you think about this plot?

  8. The simplicity of the plot is suitable for small children. The plot is not credible but that is expected in a fantasy. This will not detract from the enjoyment of the young readers.

  9. I agree, in the world of fantasy anything is possible. The children will have to suspend their disbelief of plot as wellas characters.
The characters are animals, the frog and the mouse are the main ones. The cat seems to be the antogonist, but at the end good triumphs over evil.

  10. The setting is a part of the fantasy as it changes from the mouse's house to the hollow tree for the wedding breakfast.
The characters did fit into the setting and it was easy to suspend disbelief for the duration of the story.

  11. The theme is identified as love/romance. This is a worthwhile theme which has a universal appeal. Love knows no boundaries. In the story it is seen that even animals have the need to love and be loved. Uncle Rat knows this and did not hinder his niece in her pursuit of happiness. At the end it is seen where love prevails, despite the challenge by evil cat.

  12. The language and style is very appealing. Since this was originally a song it has much rhyme and rhythm. We are told that the story is usually told or sung instead of being read and notes for the music are actually included at the end. This is very good as all young children love to sing.

  13. I totally agree with what you have said concerning rhyme and rhythm. I would add though that the language spoken by the characters Frog and mouse is natural. It is like real life situation. Mouse describes her boyfriend as a dandyman. A lover can only say the sweetes thing about his or her love. The uncle's language is commanding and realistic. He is concerned about the financial aspect of the event. Prior to that he is the protective uncle as he asks abou who was visiting. All this is so realistic. I love it. The visual and auditory images are compelling.
