  1. When Riddles come Rumbling Poems to Ponder written by Rebecca Kai Dotlich and illustrated by Karen Dugan was written in the year 2001 and published by Wordsong Boyds Mills Press Inc. This book of Poems is very exciting, as the title suggests the poems inside are written in the form of riddles. I believe these poems would really be enticing to students of all age level as they contain a lot of rhymes and the content comes from more than one culture. What makes these poems most interesting is the illustrations placed in the background of each poem. For me these illustrations provided many of the answers, I had to carefully observe a few before I could solve the riddle.How about you? Others were easy, you were able to firgure them out from the first line. I believe the poet really made an effort to reached out to students of all grade levels and this was a plus for the book. How was the book for you?

  2. Tracy, from a personal perspective, I am trying to appreciate this book. The types of riddles in this book has a different flavor from that which I am used to.To me the various illustrations does not say much to match the words. In other words the setting does not fit the time and place

  3. The book to me is very interesting it and would motivate students to want to read.It also acts as a brain teaserand capturesthe attention of any who enjoys poetry.

  4. I think I understand why you feel that way Deloris. These poems are not like those which you normally see, they have special names - They are called Free verse poems. Normally you are accostomed to poems which use much figurative languages like similie, metaphor and personification, but I would like you to know that if you continually expose your students to only these types of poems they will begin to hate them. Using Free Verse poems will help to stimulate their imagination and that is what you really want to do.

  5. The illustrations on each page provide clues and children from all age will be able to guess and challenge one another other the tocome up with suitable answer.

  6. Thanks for the explanation Tracy. I have learnt that some free verse poems have a poetic form with a rhythm while others lack consistency in rhythm. Reading these poems i see the Free Verse charactistics coming out.
    I think eventually I will find virtue in them

Tracy , I agree that this book will stimulate student's imagination and also help to develope their creative ability.One of the problems with poetry is that teachers need to be enthusiastic about teaching it and they often are not.So Dell ,try using this method to motivate your children to write.

  9. Guys,Where is the riddle in this poem taken from the book? Think of a nose surrounded by face, or a single star in the middle of space, That's me - alone solitary; come see me by plane or drop in by ferry.

  11. There are other types of poems, rhymes, concrete and formula poems. Reading throught this book I only observe one type - Free Verses, however a few of these contain rhyming words. I had mentioned before that some of these poems represent different aspects of culture - looking back I can see a great representation of multicultural consideration - the using of the hula hoop by the African-American Child on page 6 and the tampoline on page 10 then it was on to snow on page 17. What I really liked too was that there were representations from different aspects of life. This is great poetry book. Hat off to the author and Illustrator.

There is not much rhythm in these poems, however if used properly by the class teacher they will appeal to all of their children's imagination and help to create fresh sensory images of a roller coaster,marbles, bottons, spider,carrots..... These poems may appeal to the emotional side of children but I am sure they all speak about items which will really delight children. In my opinion the Free Verse form of Poems really support the meanings in each poem as everyone has different thoughts when it comes to these topics.
