  1. The book Delivering Justice writen by Jim Haskins and illustrated by Benny Andrews in the year 2005 by Candlewick Press is an autobiography about the life of Westley Wallace Law. This book is a true repersentation of the genre of Simplified biography - it appears as a picture book with frequent illustrations. Although it is said that no one has as complete a view of a life as the one who lives it, I believe that the author did a perfect job with this autobiography. I really liked this book as I was able to simpathize with the main character as he struggled to achieve his goal of ending racial discrimination in the Great Savannah Georgia.

  3. Thanks for the correction Tracy. In judging this book I woud say that it has a strong message for all of us - "determination" is the message and it suggests power. That is what I believe the author of the story wanted his audience to observe about the main character of the story - Wesley Wallace

  5. I certainly agree with you Tracy. Yvonne what do you think about the other characters in the biography? Did they fit into the setting? Did the setting show the time and place of the event?

  6. He was a strong believer of justice and was not confrontational .The people saw him as a great leaderwho was very humble and lived a simple life .Dell the other characters are not of importance right now, they are supporters to the main character. The illustrations shows the time when racial discrimation was rampant in the US

  7. What I really like about the book is that although it is a simplified biography all the major fact have been documented. Georgia was the first state in the south to end racial discrimination. The NAACP was an important movement during this time and their influence in the life of the Black race helping them to become registered voters was remarkable. The major milestones were recorded - The Voter School 1942, Westley job as a mailman-1949, Lunch counter protest -1960, The Boycott of March 17,1960 and finally in September 1961 all segregation was ended. I really liked the Afterward it helped us to know the rest of the life of the main character's life all the awards and struggles that he continued to under go just because of his affiliation with the NAACP. I am really taken a back by this biography.

  8. I wish to contribute my personal feelings about the main character. In terms of his growth and development, from a child he knew what he wanted and he remained focused. He decided to achieved and education and he did. He decided to provide for his mother so that she will not have to work in people's houses any more and he did and even though he was not given the job for which he was trained, he did not sit back and gloath about that situation instead he worked in a job below his standard and kept his promise to his mother

  10. Ay Guys! What do you think about the illustrations on the cover and on the inside? Benny Andrews did a perfect job. If this was a picture book biography the intended audience would have no trouble reading the story from the illustration. The illustration makes the characters real. The progression of the different scenes is vivid. It is truly a work of art.

  12. The author Jim Haskins is a very credible author,he grew up in Boston and taught in Harlem and then later became a university's professor in the state of Florida, where he became one of the founders of the African-American studies at that university. Note was taken that this was not the only text written by him. He did many books - biographies on the role played by blacks in American Histories including Martin Luther, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X - Heroes of Harlem. He noted the multiculture of the times, African Americans and their roles. Along with the author, the illustrator is also credible as he too grew up in the setting of the United States in Rural Morgan County. All of his painting explored life in America, so he too was able to capture the essence of the biography.
